November 16, 2021Non-preferential origin: 2022 Harmonised System
April 7, 2022There is no national or European provision requiring the affixing of an origin marking on products imported or marketed in the EU, such as “Made in EU” or “Made in Italy” or “Belgian product”, except for certain agricultural or food products.
In accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Rules of Origin, non-preferential rules of origin apply to origin marking.
When an economic operator decides to voluntarily indicate the “Made in …” (or similar indication), it must comply with the non-preferential rules of origin of the Union Customs Code (CDU).
Customs (sometimes with other national departments) is checking that economic operators do not mislead consumers about the origin of the goods they are selling. When a good bearing a non-compliant origin marking is detected at the border by a customs officer, it is immediately blocked.
Do you want to know more about origin marking or do you want to be sure that you can mention “Made in…” on your products?
